Dear Friends and Community,

After 16 years of serving the San Francisco community, the Abandoned Planet bookstore has closed its doors. We recognize the significant contribution that this independent bookstore provided to local residents, and we seek to continue using this building as a space for cultural and community development.  Within the span of this year, we hope to transform 518 Valencia into a fully accessible center for popular culture and education and make it available at low cost to organizations, community members and social movements in the Bay Area.  We recognize the need for more spaces committed to supporting local cultural expression and progressive voices seeking a distinct vision for the Bay Area.

The space will be available for events and classes after we get permits and complete construction. If you are interested in the 518 Valencia Project, please e-mail info(at)518valencia(dot)org.

Thank you,

The Kendra Alexander Foundation

REBUILDING THE CENTER

We expect that work will be completed in June so that we can open the doors to community events in July! We started construction in January 2011, and will be undergoing final inspection in July. We have worked with Asian Neighborhood Design to develop plans for the rebuild, after some necessary cleanup and demolition of the former space. Follow our progress on this website.

NEWS ABOUT 518!

Read a nice piece in Curbed SF about the new space!

And Mission Local, too.

Stay tuned!
